Oppose the Solar Farm project on the North side of Albion, IL.
The Issue
We the citizens of the city of Albion and nearby county residents have deep concerns about the proposed development of a solar farm along the Albion City and County line on the north side of Albion(Route 130). This project will unfairly impact not just our property values, but may also pose unknown environmental risks to our community.
A solar farm in such close proximity to residential properties threatens to significantly devalue our homes. The presence of industrial-scale solar panels could deter potential buyers and reduce the appeal of our neighborhood. Home ownership is one of the biggest investments in a person's life and it is unjust to compromise that without thorough consideration of all impacts.
In addition to the financial implications from the devaluation of property and homes, living adjacent to a solar farm introduces potential environmental factors that have not been adequately studied. Concerns range from the impact on local wildlife, potential of toxic chemical leaks into the soil and groundwater if the panels get damaged, or airborne to nearby residents if the panels were, on the rare occurrence, to catch fire. Notably, the noise generated and light reflection from solar panels could disrupt the quality of life in our peaceful community surrounding the Sunset lake area for years to come.
During construction, nearby residents can expect prolonged exposure to noise from heavy equipment and ongoing site activity. These activities often occur for weeks or months, sometimes starting early in the morning and continuing throughout the workday. Unlike short-term construction projects, solar farms cover large areas, meaning noise can move across the site and affect the nearby residents for extended periods.
Although quieter than the construction phase, the operating noise of solar farms are not entirely silent once operational. Ongoing noise from inverters and transformers, which emit a constant low-frequency hum. Low-frequency noise is of particular concern because it can travel farther than higher-pitched sounds and may be noticeable indoors, especially at night or during quiet periods which can cause sleep disturbance, increased stress, and overall reduced enjoyment of outdoor spaces and property nearby.
While renewable energy is vital for a sustainable future, it is imperative that such projects are carefully planned and placed in locations that do not negatively impact the local residents.
The proposed solar farm is inconsistent with the surrounding land use, which includes residential neighborhoods, agricultural land, and natural open space. This development risks altering the character of our small community and setting an undesirable precedent for future projects near city boundaries.
We urge the local Planning Commission, County Commission, and City Board members, to carefully consider the location for this solar farm. It is crucial to engage with our community to find a more suitable solution that balances the need for renewable energy with the rights and concerns of local and near site residents.
Please support this petition to oppose the current plan and stand up for our community. This project threatens property values, environmental health, and the natural beauty that makes Albion home. Sign this petition to voice your opposition to the Albion City Council granting easement access for the 942 IL Route 130 solar project.
