The Issue

Living in Newarthill has always been a blessing—it's a village where nature thrives and the greenbelt lands enfold us in a protective embrace. For generations, these green fields have been more than just plots of land; they have formed the heart and soul of our community, places where families gather, children play, and wildlife flourishes. These fields are an essential part of what makes Newarthill a cherished home, reminding us daily of the balance we strive to maintain between human endeavors and nature.

Today, this delicate balance is under threat by a proposed solar farm development on the North field at Biggar Road. While renewable energy is crucial for our future, not all projects are well-suited for every location. The proposed development represents another concerning step in the industrialisation of our precious greenbelt land, which acts as a vital buffer for our village.

We recognize the importance of solar energy, but we must ensure it's implemented in a sustainable manner that respects and preserves our local environment. There is no doubt that solar farms can contribute to battling climate change, but they must not do so at the cost of our cherished green spaces.

The north field is not derelict or unused land. It is part of the natural landscape that supports local wildlife, provides open views for residents, and offers  a green corridor for those who live, walk and commute through the area. The proposed solar farm threatens local ecosystems and wildlife habitats that have thrived here for decades. Bird species, insects, and small mammals rely on this habitat for survival. The disruption caused by the development could irreversibly damage the biodiversity that is crucial to our area.

This application does not stand in isolation. It follows two already approved battery storage developments and comes alongside an ongoing application for a major data centre opposite Greenside Garden Centre. There’s also a strong likelihood that a second solar farm application for the south field on Biggar Road/High Street will follow.

Importantly, this development will not feed into the national grid to support homes or the wider public. Instead it is intended to be hard wired to supply large, multi million pound businesses in the Newhouse area - potentially including the proposed data centre. There’s no meaningful benefit to the people of Newarthill. No reduction in local energy bills. No direct community gain. No protection for our green spaces.

Instead of consuming greenbelt land, we urge developers and policymakers to explore alternative locations for renewable energy projects. Brownfield sites, areas already designated for industrial use, could be viable options for such developments without encroaching on green spaces that our communities hold dear.

By signing this petition, you stand with the residents of Newarthill in voicing opposition to the solar farm development on the North field at Biggar Road. Let us protect our village's greenbelt land, preserve its natural beauty, and ensure that development harmonises with our environment and community well-being. Our community deserves better.
