I am writing this petition to express my concern and opposition to the proposed development at Harvest Moon Drive and Emil Kolb Parkway. This new re-zoning will allow the construction of 102 units in an 8-story building along with 22 townhomes. While development is necessary for growth, this particular proposal raises several considerable issues that could profoundly affect our community.
The primary concern is the impact on traffic and community infrastructure. Emil Kolb Parkway, developed with taxpayers' money, was designed to handle a high flow of truck drivers, acting as a bypass. It was never intended to support high-density development at an intersection. The potential increase in traffic is worrying, as it not only threatens to clog the area, delaying commutes and deliveries, but also poses a risk to public safety. Recent incidents, including the tragic death of a 23-year-old at this intersection, highlight the urgent need to address traffic concerns before adding any further strain.
Moreover, such development could dramatically alter the neighborhoods nearby, changing their character and potentially devaluing properties. Local schools and services could become overwhelmed, unable to cope with the sudden increase in residents. The community lacks the necessary infrastructure to support such rapid growth, which requires careful and thoughtful planning.
We urge the local government to consider alternative solutions that prioritize existing community needs while accommodating sustainable growth. This may include revisiting the zoning application, conducting thorough traffic impact studies, and engaging with local residents to create a mutually beneficial development plan.
