The Issue

A proposal in Congress would rename the stretch of 16th Street NW in Washington, D.C., formerly known as Black Lives Matter Plaza, as the “Charlie Kirk Freedom of Speech Plaza.” This move is deeply divisive and unnecessary, and it risks further politicizing public spaces that already carry profound meaning.

Black Lives Matter Plaza was created in 2020 during a moment of national reckoning after the killing of George Floyd. For many Americans, the plaza symbolized a call for racial justice, accountability, and recognition of longstanding inequities. Whether one agreed with the movement or not, the site became part of the country’s recent history and a reflection of a specific moment in time.

Renaming the plaza now does not foster unity. Instead, it replaces one charged symbol with another, escalating political conflict rather than calming it. Public spaces should not be used as tools for partisan messaging or as battlegrounds for ideological disputes.

Charlie Kirk’s death was tragic, and discussions about free speech and political violence are important. But honoring one cause by erasing another does not advance those conversations. It sends a message that public memorials are temporary and subject to whichever political group holds power at the moment.

America is already deeply divided. We should be looking for ways to reduce tension, not inflame it. Renaming Black Lives Matter Plaza risks reopening wounds and turning a public street into a national flashpoint once again.

We are calling on members of Congress to reject this legislation and refrain from renaming the plaza. Preserving the current designation does not require universal agreement with its symbolism. It simply acknowledges history and avoids unnecessary provocation.

Public spaces should encourage reflection, dialogue, and coexistence. They should not be repeatedly rebranded to score political points.

Please sign this petition if you believe Congress should oppose the renaming of Black Lives Matter Plaza and avoid further politicizing a site that already represents a significant chapter in recent American history.
