The Issue
The residents and property owners of Freestone County, Texas, are deeply concerned about the proposed solar farm project named Piedra Solar Farm, which is planned to be located at 2777 Cotton Gin Area, along 1365, 901, and the surrounding areas. We understand and appreciate the critical role that renewable energy plays in mitigating climate change and ensuring a sustainable future. However, the chosen site for this solar farm poses significant concerns that need to be addressed before proceeding any further.
Firstly, the location is near residential areas and will have direct implications on the property values and quality of life for those living nearby. Residents have expressed concerns that such a development would disrupt the tranquility of the community, leading to increased traffic, noise, and possible changes in the visual landscape, all of which can depreciate property values. According to studies commissioned by the Real Estate Research Institute, proximity to large-scale energy projects can result in a decrease in property values by up to 15%.
Secondly, the site in question supports diverse ecosystems that could be negatively impacted by the construction and operation of a solar farm. Local wildlife, flora, and fauna that call this area home may face disruption and habitat loss. Environmental assessments are essential to determine the potential risks, and as of now, there is inadequate information on measures that will be put in place to mitigate these effects.
Moreover, transparency and community involvement have been lacking throughout the project proposal and planning stages. Many residents feel excluded from decision-making processes that directly affect their community. According to the Texas Government Code, community engagement is critical in projects of this nature, and stakeholders must be adequately informed and involved.
We propose that alternative locations with less impact on residents and ecosystems be considered for the development of the Piedra Solar Farm. We ask for more comprehensive environmental impact assessments and stakeholder engagement processes to be implemented. It is not enough to pursue renewable energy at the expense of viable residential communities and ecosystems.
We urge the Freestone County Commissioners to listen to the voices of their constituents and to re-evaluate the feasibility and impacts of the proposed site. Please sign this petition to protect our community and ensure a responsible and thoughtful approach to renewable energy projects.
