Our community surrounding the original Envision Hotel at 81 S Huntington has been dealing with increased crime and public disorder since the temporary opening of a low-threshold shelter in November 2021. The already noticeable increase in theft, vandalism, loitering, littering, open drug use, and discarded needles presents an ongoing threat to the safety and cleanliness of our surrounds. In an alarming development, there are now plans to alter the zoning, intending to make the shelter a permanent establishment.

By approving permanent status, we fear that these issues are not just here to stay, but will worsen. While the intentions of providing shelter are noble, the approach must not harm established residential communities. Applying proper controls, enhancing supervision and engaging in open and consultative planning with residents should be the preferred path. Let's raise our concerns, seek intervention from officials and demand more responsible and sustainable solutions for the homeless in our city.
