The Issue

Jeepney is the primary mode of transportation that is unique only in the Philippines. The jeepneys are known for its loud, bold and creative designs and styles that makes this public transportation a part of the Philippine culture. But because of the government’s phase-out plan, the creative innovation is under threat. The government would like to replace jeepneys that are 15 years old or older with modern minibuses that produces less emissions. And along with all the Filipino drivers, I oppose this jeepney phase-out because replacing the jeepneys are like replacing or country’s culture.

Jeepney phase-out will cause burden to commuters since if the jeepneys are completely removed, the modernized buses will not be able to accommodate thousands of commuters every day. Price hike will also occur that will affect students and minimum wage Filipinos. The jeepney modernization program could lead to loss of livelihood of some jeepney drivers since it is expensive, and some can’t afford it. Critics of this program argues that the government has not provided financial and technical support to drivers to help them upgrade and transition to modern vehicles. It is also uncertain that the modern vehicles will last long-term. The Transport Group, Manibela that was featured in CNN Travel has protested and argued that the government scheme lacked funds puts pressure on the drivers to take the loans to comply with the modernization plan. Making drivers believe that the transition is pushing them into debt.

We call upon our decision-makers to reconsider this phase-out plan and explore more inclusive solutions that respects both environmental and social economic realities. Stand with us against this - sign this petition today!
