Oppose the Displacement of Surgical Residents to an Off-Campus Workspace

Oppose the Displacement of Surgical Residents to an Off-Campus Workspace
The Issue
The surgical residents of Wyckoff Heights Medical Center ask for your support in opposing the hospital administration's decision to relocate our primary workspace to an off-campus location. On November 30, 2022, the residents were give approximately 30 minutes notice before desks and personal belongings were removed from our workspace in room 410. Though there had been discussion of moving due to the need for expanded storage, we adamantly rejected the idea of leaving the building and no timeline had been disclosed. With this sudden and unexpected decision to take our work equipment and personal items to the offsite location, the administration effectively forcibly evicted us from the hospital premises. They have since refused to provide suitable working conditions inside of the hospital, endangering patient safety by denying us access to overhead notifications, greatly increasing response time to patient needs, and isolating us from the surgical department. Further, the administration's actions are in violation of our contract with the hospital, which states that we should be provided with "comparable space, facilities, and proximity to patient care responsibilities" in the event of relocation.
We, the undersigned, have two demands:
- that the hospital immediately cease and desist all efforts to remove the surgical residents' only common office space away from the primary hospital building; and
- that the hospital restore our access to the common office space in room 410 or, alternatively, make a comparable workspace available to the surgical residents within the primary hospital building in accordance with our contract.
As I type this from one of the four call rooms that have become our rudimentary workspaces over the past 2 days, I know this impulsive and unreasonable ejection has already negatively affected our patient care. Please support us in petitioning for this most basic need for the safety of our patients and the continuation of the surgical residency program here at Wyckoff Heights.
