The Issue

I live close to a beautiful, ecologically sensitive area that's being put at risk by the proposal to build a 500 MW battery storage facility. This facility is planned on a property dissected by a tributary that flows directly into Deer Creek, a vital waterway supporting diverse wildlife and serving as a resource for local communities. This proposed development not only poses potential environmental impacts but also raises severe public safety concerns, including the dangers of fire and other incidents.

The presence of such a large energy storage system introduces an array of risks. Studies have shown that lithium-ion batteries, commonly used for large-scale storage, can catch fire or explode if not properly managed. The risk of a fire could have devastating consequences for the natural environment, local residents, and first responders, many of whom are volunteers in our rural community.

Adding to the complexity, any accidental chemical spill or leakage can introduce toxic substances into our waterways, severely affecting the water quality in Deer Creek. A decline in water quality would not only damage local ecosystems but could also influence the health of residents who rely on these waters. It is crucial to recognize that Deer Creek plays a significant role in our environmental and community health.

A project of such magnitude requires rigorous environmental assessments and adherence to safety standards that ensure no harm comes to our environment or community members. We need comprehensive research to fully understand the potential impacts and explore alternative locations or technologies that don't threaten our local ecosystem. Effective regulatory oversight is necessary to mitigate these risks and foster renewable energy development responsibly.

Until such measures are taken, I urge community members, local leaders, and decision-makers to oppose this development. Our environment, safety, and quality of life hang in the balance, and with your voice and signature, you can help protect this precious region from irreversible harm.

Please join me by signing this petition to halt the construction of the 500 MW battery storage facility near Deer Creek. Together, we can make our community's voice heard and ensure a safer, sustainable future.

Sign this petition and stand up for the safety and ecological integrity of our homes and natural resources.

From the Office of Harford County Executive Bob Cassilly: Harford County Executive Bob Cassilly has filed with the Maryland Public Service Commission a petition to intervene in PSC Case 9866, Conastone (Oystercatcher) Battery Energy Storage Proposals, citing public safety and environmental concerns. To keep the public informed, he has established a dedicated web page containing documents related to the proposed project. In addition, a workgroup on battery energy storage has been formed by the Cassilly administration, which includes the county departments of law, planning & zoning, inspections, licenses & permits, and public works, along with representatives from the health department, county council, and community organizations, and individual community members. Workgroup updates will also be posted on the page: https://www.harfordcountymd.gov/4018/Conastone-Oystercatcher-Battery-Energy-S
