Orland Park school district 135 is reducing librarians to part time in grade K-5 schools. Having a full-time librarian is important and allows time to plan with teachers, maintain and improve library collection, promote reading and STEM programs, produce weekly newscast, and much more. Schools with full-time librarians are 3 times as likely to have advanced reading and writing test scores than schools that don’t. Primary school librarians are already traveling between two buildings, and now district 135 wants to steal from our 3-5 grade students to cover our already over-stretched primary librarians. All Orland schools deserve full-time media specialists! What programs and teaching positions will district 135 go after next?
