Oppose SB 129 and Protect Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Alabama Public Universities
The Issue
We, the undersigned, stand in strong opposition to SB 129 in the Alabama legislative session. This bill threatens the existence of offices, organizations, spaces, and educative initiatives that support diversity, equity, and inclusion from public institutions across the entire state of Alabama. Additionally, it threatens free speech surrounding “divisive topics” within educational material.
THIS BILL POSES AN IMMINENT THREAT TO EDUCATION AND FREE SPEECH WITHIN ALL ALABAMA PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS.
SB 129 would prevent the discussion of DEI topics which would greatly impact nearly every field of study, from history and law to psychology and biomedical sciences. This bill would effectively stunt the progress of our state as a whole, from our education to our healthcare systems as well as the general life and wellbeing of our citizens
This bill could bring an end to crucial resources within public institutions including but not limited to:
Organizations serving BIPOC and LGBTQ+ students
Training programs promoting DEI and cultural competency
Classes or programs on African American or Women and Gender studies
Any other class or resource teaching “divisive concepts” as outlined in the bill
Our universities thrive on diversity. As members of the Auburn community, we pledge a dedication to education, honesty, and the human touch, all of which are threatened by SB 129.
We urge you to sign this petition and join the fight against SB 129 because DIVERSITY BELONGS IN EDUCATION
