Ordinance 2024-40(am) proposes the creation of a special local improvement district for the Mendenhall River Glacier Lake Outburst Flooding (GLOF) - Hesco Barrier Project. We believe that this project would have numerous negative consequences for our local community and environment, resulting in disruption of local ecosystems, wasted tax dollars being spent towards a temporary "bandage", further unnecessary hardship on those whose homes have already been damaged and potentially exacerbating the GLOF threat rather than mitigating it. We discourage supporting a project that lacks full environmental impact assessment, adequate public input, and thorough cost-benefit analysis. Hence, we ask for the rejection of this ordinance and, instead, seek a thorough reconsideration towards more sustainable, disaster management solutions.
