The Issue

Living in North Liberty, Iowa, has always felt like being part of a close-knit community, where neighbors know each other and safety is paramount. However, the proposed rezoning of the 10 acres between W. Cherry St and W. Zeller St threatens to disrupt this harmony. If approved, 350 units across six buildings, each towering at five stories, will drastically increase vehicle and pedestrian traffic, transforming our tranquil neighborhood into a bustling corridor.

Rezoning this land from C-1-B General Commercial District and C-3 High Intensity Commercial District to CU C-3 Urban Central Higher-Intensity Commercial District might cater to commercial interests, but at what cost? The increased traffic will compromise the safety of our streets, making it more hazardous for families, children, and the elderly to navigate their daily lives. Local roads, previously safe for biking and leisurely walks, could become dangerous and overcrowded.

Moreover, these towering structures would block our beloved sunsets, a simple pleasure that many in our community cherish. These natural moments of beauty should not be overshadowed by urban development. The charm of North Liberty lies in its small-town feel, and this rezoning plan could erode the unique character that residents and visitors alike hold dear.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) notes that urban areas with high density housing often experience increases in pollution and noise levels, which can adversely affect quality of life and public health. Do we want our community to suffer these consequences?

We understand the need for development and growth. However, it is crucial that this progress respects and complements the existing community framework rather than dismantling it. Let's work together to find a balanced approach that benefits all stakeholders, ensuring that North Liberty remains a safe, beautiful, and welcoming place to live.

Sign this petition to urge the City Council of North Liberty to reconsider this rezoning plan and explore alternatives that align with our community’s values and lifestyle. Together, we can protect the character and safety of our neighborhood for current and future generations.

Former North Liberty City Mayor
Responded
Hello, Just wanted to let you know we are at the beginning stages of receiving public input for the development in question from the petition. I was present at a Public meeting last week, that we call a Good Neighbor Meeting, and had a chance to speak directly with my neighbors, there. The public's input is being taken into consideration by the developer, and city staff, and everyone present at the meeting is being updated along the way with future meeting dates/times, as well as any changes contemplated. Thank you, again, for your time and efforts. I look forward to talking more with our neighbors and community about the project in the months ahead. Take care.
