Oppose Residential Development on Sugarmill Woods Golf Course Land

The Issue

Dear Commissioners,

As a concerned member of the Cypress Village Property Owners Association (CVPOA), I/we strongly oppose the proposed development by Links Golf LLC to construct 230 residential units and a new eighteen-hole golf course on land currently designated for recreational use within the Sugarmill Woods Country Club.

This proposal represents a fundamental change in land use that directly conflicts with the established character and deed restrictions of our community. The golf course land has long served as a vital recreational and aesthetic asset to Cypress Village and its surrounding neighborhoods. Replacing it with high-density residential development would:

  • ⚠️ Violate existing deed restrictions and community covenants.
  • 🚧 Increase traffic congestion and strain local infrastructure by directly impacting 63 main and secondary streets in our community.
  • 🌳 Disrupt the environmental balance by building upon wetlands. Impervious surfaces will cause the wetlands to flood roads and neighboring houses. This project will also disrupt green space preservation.
  • 🏡 Undermine property values and the quality of life for current residents by directly affecting 656+ homes and 10 sub associations in our community.

It is our understanding that Links Golf LLC may pursue legal action to remove these deed restrictions, which would set a dangerous precedent for future development and erode the protections that CVPOA members rely on.

We urge the BOCC and Citrus County Planned Growth Management to REJECT this proposal and uphold the integrity of our community’s land use agreements.

We also encourage all CVPOA members to voice their opposition—either in writing or in person—at upcoming BOCC meetings. For those unable to attend, signed notices of objection are available at the CVPOA office and will be submitted on your behalf.

Thank you for your attention to this matter and for standing with the residents of Cypress Village in preserving our community’s values and vision.
