The Issue
PETITION TO INSTITUTIONALIZE THE NAME
SORSOGON NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL (SNHS)
We the Alumni of Sorsogon National High School (SNHS) hereby petition for reconsideration of the intentions of some elected provincial officials to rename our ALMA MATER, Sorsogon National High School in honor of the deceased Dr. Salvador H. Escudero III.
We don’t question the achievements of Dr. Escudero III or we find the intentions of these officials wrong, but we believe that even in his lifetime the late Dr. Escudero III did not harbor that in his demise his Alma Mater will be rename for him.
There are times that we have to honor our province mates, however, there are also times wherein we should give credence to others as in the case of Senator Teodoro De Vera of Bulusan, he being the first Sorsoganon elected in the upper house. We have also the late Congressman Vicente Peralta who stood in his oratorical best during his representation of Sorsogon in Congress. They also never dreamed to memorialize their names.
We believed that the issue is not to rename SORSOGON NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL instead to INSTITUTIONALIZE the name of SORSOGON NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL for the institution which all of us are attach is the primary molder of what we are now, hence this petition. We are all proud to say that I am an alumnus of Sorsogon National High School.
Our collective intelligence said that the name SORSOGON NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL is more than enough to etch the memories and achievement of the late Dr. Salvador H. Escudero III. That we rather honor Dr. Escudero III in a different vein but honoring him let us not forget the rather unknown alumnus who made also a big difference to the Province of Sorsogon and to our ALMA MATER.
We now call upon you to help INSTITUTIONALIZE the name of SORSOGON NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL that our generations is so familiar with.
We call upon you to join our petition for there is nothing best but the name of SORSOGON NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL.

REJECT PATRONAGE POLITICS, RETAIN THE NAME OF SORSOGON NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL (SNHS)!
We, the Alumni of Sorsogon National High School (SNHS) oppose the resolution by Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Sorsogon to rename the Sorsogon National High School after the late Dr. Salvador H. Escudero III.
While we do not undervalue the achievements of Dr. Escudero III, naming the public high school after him would inevitably and unnecessarily implicate the institution in a quagmire of patronage politics.
Consequently, the renaming of the school may be perceived less of a commemoration and more of an endorsement of a couched oligarchy.
As such, the act goes against democratic principles of fostering education that is independent and critical.
We would honor our leaders more, not by memorializing their names in the title of the school, but by keeping the integrity of the local public education system and shielding it from the acrimony of political patronage.
We, therefore propose that the name Sorsogon National High School be RETAINED, in the interest of political neutrality and academic integrity.
Let us fight against patronage politics!
Let us preserve the public character of SNHS! Let us assert the only name by which our alma mater can and must be recognized: SORSOGON NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL!
