The Issue

Florida Senate Bill 92 Motor Vehicle Repair Work; also known as the "Lilly Glaubach Act"; sets out on cracking down on hit & runs by requiring repair shops to require proof of an accident report, or to create a damage report for a vechicle where the damage repairs required are in excess of $5,000, and then notify local law enforcement.

We can all agree that on the surface this bill make sense; Florida consistently ranks among the top states in the US for hit and run crashes - hence why we have some of the highest car insurance rates in the nation.

However, a recent proposal was added amending the bill requiring all registered vehicles in Florida to have both a front and a rear license plate. The stated reason for adding this provision, by the writers of this bill, is to help in the instance of a hit and run by providing the ability to see a front and rear plate by either party involved in an accident or a bystander.

The addition of this proposal will likely have no change at all in the identification of vechicles involved in hit and runs. The "reasons" mentioned have no solid facts to back up their claims, and it seems to be yet another way for lawmakers to rake in more money. Not only will the addition of this bill increase registration fees for vehicles, it will also cost countless Florida residents time and money to make the necessary modifications to their vehicles. I personally always tell people that the best way to protect yourself, not only in a hit and run but a crash in general, is to get a dash cam.

I ask you to join me in letting our legislators know that we do not want the addition of this proposal to Florida Senate Bill 92.
