Oppose Police Stations closures in the West of Scotland and Glasgow

Oppose Police Stations closures in the West of Scotland and Glasgow

The Issue

POLICE Scotland has announced that 29 stations are at risk of closure. These include the following police stations in the West of Scotland.

Greenock
Paisley
Ferguslie Park
Dumbarton
Alexandria
Bishopbriggs
Milngavie

Of all of the 29 stations threatened with Closure 14 are located in Glasgow and the West. Nobody in Scotland should see their streets made less safe but the proposed closures disproportionately single Glasgow and the West out for cuts.

The West of Scotland has been further disproportionately targeted by Police Scotland’s Senior management team for these cuts as part of a closure programme for Glasgow and the West that will also see the closure of Castlemilk, Saracen, Stewart Street, Gorbals, Baillieston, Pacific Quay and Ayr Police Stations meaning that the remaining Glasgow Police stations will be overwhelmed by Police Officers taking accused people to the City from all over the West and likely then spending large parts of their shifts waiting in a queue in Glasgow instead of serving our communities.

This means that Police Officers will no longer have a base in the stations in the communities threatened with closure. That means that every time the police have to bring someone accused of a crime to a police station to be charged or held in custody the Police Officers will have to leave these communities to transfer them to Glasgow. This means that these Police Officers will no longer be available in our communities whilst they are travelling to and from Glasgow.

We will also be faced with a situation that the start and end of every Police Officers shift will be spent driving from Glasgow and back to Glasgow instead of being based in the communities they serve.

This will lead to fewer police in our communities to keep them safe. These cuts are an unacceptable risk to the safety of people in Glasgow and the West and the must be opposed.

Oppose these cuts and send a message to Police Scotland’s management that they will not be accepted by the communities they will impact on.
