The Issue

Cheyney University, a significant part of each student's life, has recently opted to modify its housing arrangements. Unfortunately, these changes come with disappointing consequences for those who call the campus their home. The university administration decided to convert double rooms into triple-occupancy rooms and quad rooms into six-person rooms. This decision deeply concerns us, the students, primarily because it compromises our safety and quality of life.

Overcrowding in student housing poses several risks. Increased numbers in a confined space can lead to heightened stress levels and anxiety, an escalation in conflicts among roommates, and could potentially hinder students' academic performances. Furthermore, emergency evacuations could be more challenging, putting everyone's safety at risk during unforeseen incidents.

Many students selected Cheyney University for the promise of a supportive and community-centric environment. By converting rooms to accommodate more individuals than they were designed for, the administration may inadvertently erode the very community spirit they aim to foster. Institutions similar in size or larger than Cheyney University maintain policies against such overcrowding, underscoring the unsustainability of this decision.

Moreover, this approach doesn't align with modern standards for student accommodations. Most universities strive to enhance student experiences, taking into consideration the optimal living conditions that contribute to both academic success and personal wellbeing.

We urge the administration to reconsider this approach by exploring alternative measures. Options might include offering financial incentives for off-campus housing to those willing and capable of making such transitions. Additionally, capital investments in building new dormitories could be investigated. Expanding the scholarship programs to afford students better housing choices may also be a possible solution.

We, the Cheyney University community, urge you to sign this petition to ensure our voices are heard. Let’s advocate for a campus environment that prioritizes the welfare and safety of its students above all else.
