Oppose Ordinance 11-A on Animal Control in Deer Lodge County

Oppose Ordinance 11-A on Animal Control in Deer Lodge County
The Issue
People in Anaconda, MT are already facing the challenging task of feeding their families. Ordinance 11-A, a draft for the Control of Domestic Animals within Deer Lodge County, is threatening to exacerbate financial strains by imposing unreasonable restrictions on residents who rely on animals for sustenance and companionship.
This ordinance threatens to eliminate the ability for residents to have ducks, geese, and roosters, which many rely on for fresh eggs—a vital source of protein and an economical way for families to sustain themselves. The limitations aren't confined to the town; the ordinance affects the entire county, leaving a widespread impact on our agriculturally active community.
Furthermore, these restrictions could have a detrimental effect on youth agricultural programs like 4H and FFA, which are integral to developing the next generation of farmers and agricultural leaders. Not being allowed to keep certain animals could hinder educational opportunities and diminish the resources of these vital programs.
In addition to livestock restrictions, the ordinance also imposes limits on the number of dogs and cats residents can have. For animal lovers and protectors, this could lead to increased abandonment and a rising population of homeless pets, further burdening our already strained animal shelters. The requirement for costly permits adds another layer of financial burden that many cannot bear.
Livestock guardian dogs and hunting hounds critical to farm operations are also under threat; these working animals need freedom of movement to perform their duties, yet the ordinance classifies any dog off-leash as "at large."
This is a call for the people of Anaconda and Deer Lodge County to come together and oppose Ordinance 11-A. Prevent unnecessary financial and emotional strain, preserve our way of life, and protect our community's agriculture and animal welfare systems. Sign this petition to stand against Ordinance 11-A and ensure that our voices are heard.
