Oppose new Hanover School Division health policy
Oppose new Hanover School Division health policy
The Issue
As a parent of children who currently rely on essential health care services in the Steinbach Regional Secondary School (SRSS), I'm deeply concerned about the impending policy proposal by the Hanover School Division. This new policy threatens to remove mature minors' ability to access health care within the school system without parental consent. Such a change would have serious repercussions not only on my own family but also on countless others who depend on these critical services.
The proposed policy undermines students' autonomy and the professional judgment of school health care providers. Mature minors often rely on the discretion of health professionals within schools to address sensitive health issues, which they might feel uncomfortable discussing with their parents. Schools serve as safe environments where students can seek advice and services related to sexual and reproductive health, mental well-being, and more. Removing this access could deter students from seeking help and potentially exacerbate health issues that need timely attention.
Many minors face barriers at home that make it difficult or unsafe for them to discuss health issues with their parents. For these students, school-based health care is not just a convenience—it's a necessity. Studies have shown that accessible health services within schools play a critical role in improving student health outcomes, increasing educational engagement, and fostering a supportive school environment.
The current policy respects the maturity and decision-making capacity of minors, recognizing that they can, in many instances, make informed decisions about their own health care. If we transition to requiring parental consent for all matters, we risk alienating and harming students.
We urge the Hanover School Division to reconsider this proposed policy amendment. The health and well-being of students depend on their ability to freely access necessary health services in a trusted setting without fear of judgment, rejection, or conflict. Let us prioritize our children's health by maintaining their autonomy and access to essential services in schools.
Join me in opposing this policy change that could detrimentally affect our children and their education. Please sign this petition to make sure that our children’s right to health care and privacy is preserved within their school system.
