Oppose 'Minga' App Usage in Northglenn High School - Protect Student Privacy!

The Issue

Northglenn has been experiencing several issues in terms of regulating who goes to the bathroom and at what times. Usually, this includes people wandering the halls or staying in the bathrooms for much longer than needed. Of course, a solution was needed. 'Minga' is a mobile and Chromebook application that can help monitor how long students remain in the bathrooms by giving out hall passes. However, this app isn't the best in terms of the Colorado Department of Education's laws.

All students who attend Northglenn High School have been unknowingly enrolled with 'Minga' over the 2023 Winter Holiday Break, which is linked to Clever; a common educational use-based application. Using Clever as a direct link forces students to already have their information in a place that has consent but is inherently linking to another 3rd party source that does not have consent. The issue is not the application itself, but rather the way that it has access to our student information. This includes (but is not limited to): Name, Student ID, Student Image, IP Address, Hardware Settings, Birthdate, Email, Software, and many more.

Is it true that the staff at Northglenn High School has notified us of the new rule? Yes. But they have failed to give us the full transparency of what, where, and why our personal information is needed from students. The companies that Minga gives out information to include: Google, MailChimp, Watson, Perspective, and Sight Engine. All of which have had data breaches within the past year. Acting now not only protects you or your student from having their data stolen, but the bigger prevention is to take down unauthorized use of our data before giving us consent.
