Oppose Mandatory Internet Fees and Forced ISP Contracts at Kapilina Beach Homes
Oppose Mandatory Internet Fees and Forced ISP Contracts at Kapilina Beach Homes
The Issue
Under the new policy, residents state they are being required to pay approximately $49 per month for Spectrum internet service through management, whether or not they:
want the service,
already use another provider,
or use the internet service at all.
Many residents report that this material lease change was disclosed only recently, despite leases requiring 60 days notice to vacate, leaving tenants with little practical ability to relocate or reconsider renewal decisions after learning of the new mandatory fee.
Residents also report receiving conflicting information regarding whether participation would be optional before management later confirmed that tenants “have no choice” and must participate as a condition of renewing their lease.
Importantly, these are standalone residential homes and townhome-style units rather than traditional apartment buildings with centralized shared internet infrastructure.
Residents signing below respectfully request that Kapilina Beach Homes management:
allow residents to opt out of mandatory internet service,
permit tenants to choose their own internet provider,
suspend implementation until adequate notice is provided,
provide transparency regarding the nature of the agreement,
and reconsider policies that increase mandatory housing costs during Hawaiʻi’s ongoing affordability crisis.
This petition is intended to demonstrate the number of residents affected and concerned by the policy and to support discussions with consumer protection agencies, telecommunications regulators, elected officials, and local media.
