The Issue

As a resident, parent of little children, and caregiver to our elderly in Lake Bluff, IL, I am deeply concerned about the potential risks posed by the recent M3 zoning change of the EMCO Chemical Packaging building.

Located just 250 feet east of the Sanctuary community and only a short distance from Lake Bluff Elementary School, this change poses a significant threat to the health and well-being of our families. The proximity of EMCO to both residential neighborhoods and our local school increases the risk of exposure to hazardous emissions or chemical leakage, which could have lasting consequences for the health of our children and residents.

Zoning regulations exist to protect communities by ensuring that industrial activities like chemical packaging are located at a safe distance from homes, schools, and vulnerable populations. The M3 zoning change for EMCO disregards this critical safety measure, potentially compromising the quality of our air, soil, and water.

Hazardous chemicals can have severe consequences on public health and the environment. According to the American Lung Association, exposure to toxic substances can lead to respiratory issues, contribute to environmental pollution, and disturb local ecosystems. The threat is magnified by EMCO’s proximity to residential areas and a school that serves young children.

Our community deserves to live, learn, and grow in a safe environment where the air we breathe and the water we drink are free from contamination. Ensuring that industrial facilities comply with appropriate zoning laws is not just a legal obligation—it is a moral one. It protects our current population and preserves the integrity of Lake Bluff for future generations.

Our community urges local authorities to reverse the M3 zoning change for the EMCO Chemical Packaging building and re-evaluate the safety protocols to ensure our community’s protection from potential chemical hazards. Together, we can advocate for a healthier and safer Lake Bluff. Please sign this petition to support our call for action to protect our health, our children, and our environment.
