Oppose Limestone Quarry Proposal on Pt. Peninsula!

The Issue

Point Peninsula is a cherished part of our town, where residents and visitors alike enjoy the tranquility of nature and the beauty of Lake Ontario. It is also a wildlife sanctuary and a land of historical significance to Indigenous peoples. This petition is an outreach to the members of the impacted communities and concerned members of the public. We ask you to support us in our opposition to the proposed quarry by adding your name to this petition.

We, the undersigned residents and concerned advocates for the preservation of our community, environment, and wildlife on Point Peninsula, urgently petition the Town of Lyme to reject the proposed limestone quarry submitted by J.E. Sheehan Contracting Corp. We implore the Town to consider the following compelling concerns:

Environmental Concerns: The proposed quarry poses an immediate and significant threat to our community and wildlife. Delicate underground aquifers, water wells, and natural habitats are at risk of disruption and contamination. The potential harm to protected species, including osprey, bald eagles, short-eared owls, and snowy owls, as well as other wildlife such as hawks, deer, turkeys, pheasants, and marine life, underscores the unacceptable risk to their unique natural habitats.

Water Quality Concerns: The potential disruption to underground aquifers and water wells by the proposed quarry raises significant concerns about contamination, which would lead to the loss of clean water for residents.

Close Proximity to Lake Ontario: Furthermore, the proposed quarry's close proximity, within a 1/4 mile from the shores of Lake Ontario, raises alarming concerns about the potential disruption to marine life and the intricate balance of the delicate ecosystem in this area. Lake Ontario is a vital natural resource, and any compromise to its waters, aquatic life, and surrounding habitats poses a grave threat to the ecological health of the region. This situation demands the unequivocal rejection of the quarry.

Community Impact: We strongly oppose the proposed quarry due to the likely decline in property values, its potential destruction of established dwellings from blasting, and adverse impact on the quality of life for full-time and seasonal residents. The well-being of our community should not be compromised for short-term gains associated with the quarry.

Health and Safety Risks: Concerns regarding dust control, air quality, and noise pollution are not mere inconveniences but serious threats to the health and well-being of residents. We adamantly oppose any project that puts the respiratory health of our community at risk and compromises the peace and serenity of our residential environment.

Hours of Operation: We, the undersigned, uniformly reject the notion of permitting any hours of operation for the quarry. Quarry activities, regardless of operational hours, will have detrimental effects on the daily lives of residents. Preserving community tranquility is non-negotiable.

Setbacks and Barriers: Adequate setbacks and barriers are insufficient to mitigate the inherent risks posed by the quarry. The establishment of a limestone quarry in our residential haven poses an inherent threat to the health, safety, and privacy of our residents.

Road Damage and Infrastructure Concerns: The proposed quarry's activities, involving 50-80 trucks of stone per day, 6 days per week, will cause significant road damage and strain on local infrastructure. The current road system and infrastructure are ill-equipped to handle such heavy and frequent transportation, jeopardizing the safety and convenience of our entire community.

Legal Inappropriateness of Proposed Quarry Site Zoning Alteration: The proposed quarry site is currently zoned as residential/tourist/recreational, not for industrial or commercial purposes. Any attempt to alter zoning regulations for the proposed quarry project is not only inappropriate but also illegal. In the state of New York, spot zoning is not allowed to benefit one individual or set of individuals unless it benefits the comprehensive plan for the area.

These concerns are not speculative; they are grounded in the understanding that the quarry's establishment directly jeopardizes the rich biodiversity and ecological integrity of Point Peninsula. We firmly oppose any project that places our local ecosystems, wildlife, and the marine environment at risk.

In conclusion, we, the undersigned, assert our firm stance against the proposed limestone quarry on Point Peninsula. The potential compromise to safety, the well-being of residents, and the harmonious nature of our community cannot be mitigated by piecemeal measures. We implore the Town of Lyme to prioritize the unequivocal rejection of the proposed quarry, safeguarding the interests of its residents over any short-term gains that may be associated with the project.

Thank you for your attention to these critical matters. We trust that the Town of Lyme will prioritize the concerns of its residents and take all necessary steps to protect our community and environment, both now and in the future.
