This map shows the locations of our municipal wells, well head protection areas and the permeable lands required for recharging our aquifers. Agricultural land is not only important for growing our food and feeding our cities but it is an essential part of our water supply system. This is our protected Bluebelt.

Our Official Plan for development is a comprehensive and measured approach to growth, in locations and at a pace, that preserves and protects our water supply. Our water is an invaluable and limited resource that we must not take for granted and cannot live without.

The current Water Crisis in Waterloo Region is a dire warning to all Ontarians that the resiliency of our economies and the sustainability of our communities are dependent on a consistent and carefully managed supply of clean water.

The Water Crisis is not limited by regional boundaries. Centre Wellington, Guelph, Brantford, Paris and surrounding counties are all highly dependent on groundwater and river water; the moraines and all of our ecosystems within the watershed are highly interconnected.

As stewards of the Headwaters for the Grand River Watershed, we have an obligation to all of the communities who live downstream from us. We must protect our surface waters from pollution, take only what we need and give back by preserving the permeable lands that recharge our aquifers; for ourselves, for our neighbouring communities and for future generations.

The Ontario Government’s removal of “Red Tape”, their plan to consolidate Conservation Authorities and their haste to override our democratic municipal planning endangers public health and safety to benefit profit driven developers.

Water is life; it’s worth our respect.
