We all know the Beaver to be Natures Master Builder. They create Lodges to protect their families, Canals for safe and efficient transportation and Dams to create pond habitats with new opportunities for diverse communities. Fish, frogs, turtles, mammals, insects and birds all prosper together in the balanced wetland ecosystem crafted by the Beaver.

Ironically, Sorbara/ Tribute Brubacher has been trying to evict Beavers from their wetland property on Beatty Line for years. The Beavers will always come back because it’s the wetland headwaters of the Nicol Drain creek; which flows into the Irvine River and the Elora Gorge. I didn’t read anything about the beavers in the Environmental Assessment. They must not have been there on the day they came to observe wildlife.

This 106 Acre property has 3 areas of Provincially Significant Wetland. Only 60% of the property can be developed. 569 units are planned. This property is excluded from our Official Plan of Development.

An access road will be built across the wetland, which will likely buckle and twist with the freeze and thaw; but not until the developer has gone and left it as a taxpayers concern.

Our Conservation Authorities used to protect us from these risks, before the Ontario government issued them a gag order and tied their hands in an effort to make developments happen faster. Perhaps we should heed the warnings of our expert authority on development: The Beaver.
