Oppose Kentucky's Senate Bill 79, Amendment 1 - Protect Remote Work

The Issue

I, like many others, am deeply affected and concerned by Senate Bill 79, Amendment 1, which seeks to end telework for all state employees in Kentucky. This draconian policy shift particularly affects those laboring in the call services branch as well as all SNAP, Childcare, and Medicaid workers.

Terminating teleworking positions not only risks dismantling established routines and structures that have proven successful for both employees and the state alike, but it also underscores a troubling ignorance about what this operational change will actually cost us as Kentuckians.

By forcing state employees into buildings and offices, Kentucky is staring down the barrel of significant expenditure. Leasing additional office spaces could end up costing the state millions of dollars. Moreover, the invaluable human resource of dedicated staff could be thrown into disarray, uprooting families and disrupting lives as employees seek roles elsewhere that provide telecommuting alternatives.

This isn't just a fight for the right to work from home, it's standing against an ill-considered decision that will leave Kentuckians bearing the cost. An unnecessary burden delivered at a time when we can least afford it, and for what apparent gain? We implore lawmakers to consider the long-term implications that this amendment will have on our state's economy, the livelihood of its workers, and the services provided.
