Oppose IPAS centre in Ballyliffin
The issue
Ballyliffin, a small rural village in County Donegal, with a population of 90 residents, has always been a source of pride for those who live there or have roots in the area. Known for its natural beauty and strong community spirit, it is a place where people look out for one another and where change is considered carefully to protect the village’s character.
Recently, a planning application was submitted to convert the Strand Hotel into accommodation for 160 asylum seekers. While Donegal County Council has decided not to proceed with the application at this time, we understand that the hotel’s owner, Mark Crossan, may be planning to submit an appeal.
As a community, we fully acknowledge the importance of supporting those in need. Ireland has a proud history of providing refuge to people fleeing conflict and hardship. However, the impact of such a development on a village as small as Ballyliffin cannot be overlooked. With a population of only a few hundred people, our infrastructure—particularly in education, healthcare, and public services—is simply not equipped to handle a significant and rapid increase in residents.
This concern is not about opposing the arrival of those in need, but about ensuring that any decisions made are sustainable, respectful to the host community, and considerate of the needs of both local residents and asylum seekers. The well-being of all involved must be central to the process.
As someone originally from Ballyliffin who is currently living abroad, I care deeply about the future of the village and hope to return one day. The transformation of a key local facility like the Strand Hotel would have a long-term impact on the area, and decisions of this scale deserve thorough public consultation and planning.
We urge the Donegal County Council and all relevant authorities to carefully reconsider any future appeal and to prioritise a solution that supports asylum seekers in appropriate, well-resourced locations—while also preserving the fabric of our rural communities.
Please SIGN this petition to support a reassessment of the proposed plans. Let’s come together to ensure that the voice of Ballyliffin is heard. 🙏
