The Issue

I have personally faced severe grief and struggled with mental stability, and throughout these challenges, cannabis has been a remarkable aid in my journey towards healing and well-being. It is deeply unsettling to think that others would choose to impose limitations on access to this natural medicine, which has been invaluable not just to me, but to countless others who find solace and relief in its use.

The city of Glen Cove, New York, is proposing a law that would impose fines of up to $250 on individuals who smoke cannabis in public. This proposed legislation seems to be more of a money-making scheme for the city rather than a genuine concern for public interest. It unfairly targets working-class individuals who may not have private spaces to consume cannabis, putting them at constant risk of being penalized by those who believe they have the right to control the habits of others while overlooking their own.

Cannabis is known for its therapeutic benefits, offering relief from anxiety, depression, and chronic pain, and should be accessible without fear of retribution, especially to those who rely on it as a part of their healthcare. Restricting its public use while imposing heavy fines only serves to undermine the freedoms of responsible adults who choose cannabis as a part of their lifestyle or therapeutic regimen.

Instead of penalizing users, let us propose a more balanced approach that respects individual rights and recognizes cannabis's benefits. This could include designated public areas for cannabis consumption, educational programs about responsible use, and open dialogues with the community to address any concerns without fear of punishment.

Join me in standing up against this disproportionate legislation and in advocating for fair and equitable access to cannabis. Let's protect our rights and oppose unnecessary fines that do more harm than good. Please sign this petition to urge the city of Glen Cove to reconsider this law and strive for solutions that truly serve the community.
