Dollar General is requesting to build on a Recreational/Fprest zoned property. Many home owners are against having Dollar General as a neighbor. This will set a precedent for other business to do the same.
Other reasons below are taken from one of many articles on the negative impact of Dollar General Stores on small rural communities
1. Chain dollar stores threaten existing and potential businesses, particularly grocery stores.
2. Chain dollar stores create fewer jobs and pay lower wages than the grocery stores they often displace.
3. Dollar store employees suffer from their companies’ poor labor practices.
4. Chain dollar stores use their enormous market power to pressure suppliers to give them deals not available to small businesses.
5. A community’s architecture, its public spaces, its landscape, and its businesses give it a unique sense of identity — and a unique sense of identity creates the tangible market value essential to successful economic development.
6. Dollar store chains create and exacerbate traffic congestion and safety problems.
