The Issue

The proposed inclusion of 2,000 new homes within the local development plan, situated on St John’s Fields in Colchester, poses a substantial threat to the area’s ecological balance and the long-term well-being of its community. This site is adjacent to woodland designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSI), an area that plays a crucial role in nurturing local biodiversity and providing a sanctuary for numerous plant and animal species. Disrupting this site for housing development would cause irreversible ecological damage.

Moreover, the infrastructure in Colchester is ill-prepared for such a large influx of new inhabitants. Roads are already heavily congested, and further strain would only exacerbate existing issues, making daily commutes an even greater ordeal for current residents. Local public services, including the hospital, are overwhelmed, with already lengthy waiting lists that could be further elongated with the introduction of more residents. Currently, there are no provision for additional healthcare facilities, such as doctor's surgeries or dental practices, to accommodate the increased population.

The development also fails to consider the socio-economic impact on the local community. Adequate provisions for schools, public transport, and community facilities have not been clearly outlined, creating concerns about the quality of life for both current and future residents.

This petition calls for a re-evaluation of this proposal to ensure that development in Colchester is sustainable and considers the long-term impact on the community and environment. Support this cause to protect Colchester’s natural heritage and to push for thoughtful urban planning that meets the genuine needs of its residents. Sign this petition to stand against the development and advocate for a sustainable future for Colchester.
