In August 2025, Cardinia Shire Council announced it would ask Geographic Names Victoria to formally declare ‘Honora Fields’ as the new suburb name for the land presently known as Pakenham East.

This is an unsuitable suburb name because:

• Many in the community did not vote for “Honora Fields”. Out of the 1840 votes received (from the local population of 54,118 people), only 636 were supportive of the name. That indicates that the majority, 1155 votes, were for names other than “Honora.” 
• It is too similar to Hallora, a small rural town in Baw Baw Shire east of Cardinia Shire. 
• “Honora Fields” has already garnered an offensive nickname online, that being “Horror Fields”.

  

• Clyde North was allowed to remain named Clyde North, so why does Pakenham East need to change? Community pressure and a petition just like this one, was enough to successfully stop the re-naming of Clyde North:

• The newly built train station in the suburb is called “Pakenham East” so wouldn’t it make sense to have the suburb name to match? Precedence for the use of the name “Pakenham East” has been set by the State Government itself, when it named the station. Given it has been in operation since 3rd June 2024, the name “Pakenham East” now has a wider acceptance beyond the Cardinia Shire and its immediate surrounds as a result. In fact, the whole train line is now referred to as the “Pakenham East line.” 
• I believe “Honora” is one of the least palatable names of all of the options put forward by Council. In fact, none of the 6 options were appealing. 

The Minister for Local Government and other State MP’s have been asked to intervene in this matter.

This petition will be presented to Geographic Names Victoria to oppose the Pakenham East suburb re-naming.
