Oppose busy and overwhelming school schedules

The Issue

An average school schedule for a student is for them to arrive at school between 7:00 and 8:00 a.m., walk to their first class, sit for an hour, and then continue this for the remainder of the day with a short lunch break. School is training students to sit for hours and to do so quietly. This is quite similar to what a person would experience at an office job. This schedule often causes students to be overworked and stressed.

Even with the amount of time teachers are given, they seem to struggle to get through the entire lesson plan and as a result, give students homework. After working at school for 8 hours or more, considering that some students must stay later due to transportation, they go home and continue to work. If a student has a busy schedule, has personal things going on, or is not able to go home immediately after school they may become overwhelmed and not have time to do things that are necessary at home.

At school, a student must get to class in 3-5 minutes or they are counted as tardy and receive consequences. This can be difficult if the student's class is across the school and there are more students in the hallway. Sitting in school for hours being quiet and doing the work assigned can affect a student's creativity and may make them feel as though school is a "prison". Most students want to pursue a career that will not require them to sit and work for hours in silence. For example, most students I have had interactions with want to be in the medical field. Being a nurse or surgeon does not include or require sitting for hours on end in silence. To sum everything up, schools should take into consideration the lives, feelings, and mental states of students before they give them crammed and overwhelming schedules.
