Oppose Budget Cuts to Libraries and Museum in Peterborough

Oppose Budget Cuts to Libraries and Museum in Peterborough
The Issue
We, the undersigned, oppose the proposed 2025/26 budget cuts to libraries and museum in Peterborough, which will disproportionately impact home-educated families by limiting access to vital educational resources, learning spaces, and cultural opportunities.
The Negative Impact:
Reduced Access: The proposal to close certain libraries and reduce museum operating hours will severely limit access to books, digital tools, and interactive exhibits essential for home-educated children.
Loss of Equity: Centralizing services creates barriers for families in rural areas or with limited transportation, exacerbating educational inequalities.
Cancelled Programs: Educational workshops and events critical for home-educated children’s development may be eliminated due to budget constraints.
Increased Costs: Potential increases in service fees could make cultural resources inaccessible to low-income families.
Digital Divide: Not all families have reliable internet access, making physical libraries and museums indispensable for equitable education.
We Call on the Council to:
Retain Equitable Access: Maintain a sufficient number of libraries and museum services to ensure all families, regardless of location or financial situation, have access to vital educational resources.
Preserve Learning Programs: Protect the availability of cultural and educational programs that serve as a cornerstone of experiential learning for home-educated children.
Prioritize Affordability: Ensure that any changes to service fees for museums or digital resources remain affordable and accessible to all families.
Engage with Stakeholders: Actively consult with home-educating families and other affected groups to explore alternative solutions that meet the needs of all residents.
Libraries and museums are pillars of education and community enrichment. These proposed cuts would harm home-educated children and deprive them of critical learning opportunities.
