Oppose Argentinian President Milei from receiving Liberal Institute Award
The Issue
The Czech Liberal Institute (Liberální institut) plans to award the right-wing libertarian president of Argentina, Javier Milei, with its annual award during his visit to Prague around June 18. At the invitation of the Liberal Institute, Milei is planned to give a lecture at the Žofín Palace.
President Milei is a liberal economist and advocate for laissez-faire economies. Argentina, a country with extreme poverty and sky high inflation rates, voted the president into office last December. Since then, Milei has abolished ministerial offices, cut down of state funding for public education, and abandoned anti-nepotism laws in order to instate his sister as General Secretary.
More than half of Argentina’s population lives in poverty, struggling to pay outrageous prices for gas, rent and food.
Milei has been described as a populist, regularly photographed alongside controversial figures such as Elon Musk and Victor Orbán. He opposes free journalism, free healthcare, abortion, and threatens Argentinian democracy.
Milei accoused Argentinian public universities to be used “for shady business and to indoctrinate."
Why would academics like Jiri Schwarz, the president of Anglo-American University Prague and co-founder of the Liberal Institute, support someone who consistently spreads disinformation, is hostile to public media and attempts to dismantle the democratic rights of marginalised people?
In a country like the Czech Republic where students fought hard to achieve democracy, why would the president of an academic institution award someone who is an active threat to it?
Milei’s extreme take on Laissez-Faire Capitalism is concerning. This blatant populism is not to be congratulated or encouraged.
Legitimising populism through awards given by respected institutions furthers the narrative that extremist leaders should be normalised.
SIGN THE PETITION! Tell the Liberal Institute, the Anglo-American University and Jiri Schwarz that you don’t think Milei deserves to be recognised!
