Dear Senator Alsobrooks and Senator Van Hollen,

We are writing as your constituents from Greenbelt, Maryland, to express our strong opposition to the appropriations bill H.R. 7147, which provides increased funding for the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

While we recognize the importance of maintaining government operations, we cannot support legislation that continues to allocate resources to agencies whose enforcement practices harm immigrant communities, communities of color, and those who stand in solidarity with them. ICE’s record includes family separations, prolonged detentions under inhumane conditions, lack of transparency and oversight, and enforcement actions that have caused physical and emotional harm and, in some cases, death. Continued funding without meaningful accountability perpetuates these injustices and signals that enforcement is being prioritized over compassion, justice, and basic human rights.

We urge you to oppose any government funding bill that expands or maintains resources for ICE and CBP. Instead, we encourage you to advocate for policies that uphold human dignity, protect families, and invest in community-based solutions that truly promote safety and stability.

Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. We hope you will stand with your constituents who are calling for accountability, transparency, and humane treatment for all members of our community.

Sincerely,
Greenbelt Resistance Network
