Oppose 365 Short Term Letting Cap in Byron Bay

Oppose 365 Short Term Letting Cap in Byron Bay
The issue
Following the Independent Planning Commission’s visit to Byron Bay, their recommendation was 60-night cap for everyone with some tourist areas designated as 365-night cap.
Butler Street Precinct was designated a 60-night cap area on the original map..
In December, owners of Alcorn Street, Suffolk Park residences asked the council to be taken from a 365-night cap to a 60-night cap. Therefore, setting a precedent for changes in nightly caps.
A resident of Butler Street precinct looked at the map in December to find that our area had been moved from a 60-night cap to a 365-night cap while Alcorn Street, Suffolk Park went from a 365-night cap to a 60-night cap.
This was an un-negotiated, uninformed, non-transparent change from 180 nights to 365-nights for Butler Street Precinct to benefit the owners in Alcorn Street, Suffolk Park.
Obviously, this has been a massive blow to the residents of the Butler Street Precinct who already struggle with the nature of Short-Term Holiday letting. Many residents have lived in their homes all their lives. Many residents have renovated their homes to allow for aged and disability family to live together.
Most interpret this action as an eviction notice.
The residents of the Butler Street Precinct have asked the Council that we be included in the 60-night cap like the rest of Byron Bay.
Our meeting with the mayor was disappointing and entirely un-productive. He commented that he didn’t want to set a precedent! However, he already had, changing Alcorn Street, Suffolk Park from 365 to 60 nights.
We need, and ask for, the help of the residents of Byron Bay to ensure that all of Byron Bay is covered by the same rules.
If we are successful in our plea to Council to be treated in the same manner as the rest of Byron Bay, we envision a number of residential properties, that have in the past, housed the young workers in town, may return to the long-term rental market. This actually means approximately 80-100 beds could become available so young workers could live in Byron Bay where they work.
Please join with your community to ensure that we have ONE Byron Bay, not a town ravished by a mayor who is unreceptive to any measures that could remedy this.
Help us send a strong message to the Mayor and Council that we, the residents are his constituents, not the absentee landlords.
Butler Street Precinct residents deserve the same conditions as all residents of Byron Bay. We are one town and united, we can send a strong message that we are who vote for Council and are to be treated with dignity and honesty.
