Open The Restrooms

The Issue

Duncanville High School is the education building to over 4,000 students. Students are expected to be at school from 7:30 am- 3:00 pm, to receive a decent education before being pushed into the real world. With its many flaws, that all schools have, students are expected to take them and move on. Although I can agree with these sediments, when is the line crossed?

Inside Duncanville High are 8 bathrooms meant to be used by students. This only includes restrooms that are in the hallway, not private restrooms for specific classes. Of those 8 restrooms, there are 2 or 3 restrooms accessible to students on a daily basis. Of those restroom, there are only 5 urinals and a single stall in the boys’ restroom, while there are 6 stalls in the girls’. This could be manageable for 4,000 kids, but that is if all 8 restrooms were open.

Restroom shut downs have been summed up to, “preventing students from smoking, fighting, or skipping” in the restrooms. These activities account for, maybe 20% of students in the school. So what about the others? There is also initiative to not allow students to go to the restroom during lunch block or during 1st and 8th block. The only problem with these rules, is that students are instructed to go to class before they are able to use the restrooms.

It is understandable that administration wants to keep the students from participating in prohibited activities, but when are students who have good intentions allowed to use the restroom and not have to walk across the near 1,000 sq/f school?

We are asking that you sign this petition for the restrooms to be opened and used for what they are made for!
