Open the gate to Sewells Falls beach and boat launch
The Issue
For many families, including mine, Sewells Falls beach has been a cherished place for weekends, picnics, and gatherings. It's a beautiful spot on the river that brings joy and tranquility. However, recent changes have made accessing this beloved location challenging, especially for individuals with disabilities.
The gate to Sewells Falls beach and the boat launch access road is currently closed, forcing visitors to make a long trek just to reach the waterfront. For people like myself who live with disabilities, this journey is not just inconvenient—it's almost impossible. Walking the distance required from the new gate, even on a good day, can be an exhausting ordeal. Add to this the sweltering summer heat, and it becomes a dangerous proposition.
The joy of reaching the river should not come with such difficulties or risks. Sewells Falls is for everyone; its accessibility should reflect that ideal. By opening the gate from dawn to dusk, we can ensure that everyone, irrespective of their physical limitations, can enjoy the beach safely and comfortably.
Access to natural areas is a right everyone should have, without barriers or limitations. The current situation diminishes an inclusive community spirit, by excluding those who are unable to make the hike. It's time to restore fair access to Sewells Falls for all.
I urge the relevant authorities to reconsider the current restricted access policy and open the gate to Sewells Falls beach and boat launch from dawn to dusk. This simple action can significantly improve accessibility while maintaining the area's safety and enjoyment for all visitors.
Closing the gate is unlikely to prevent the behaviors you are trying to control. Look at all the break-ins at Shoestring beach. And people are even less likely to carry their trash out if the have to lug it even farther.
Please, support this initiative for greater accessibility and inclusivity at Sewells Falls by signing this petition. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in our community and ensure everyone can enjoy the beautiful riverbank equally.
