Open the Electricity Market to All Retailers for Consumer Savings

The issue

Our personal experience with the monopolized energy market is something I believe many Queensland residents can resonate with. Ergon and Energex have been the only options available to us for over 10 years. This lack of competition not only stifles innovation but burdens us with high electricity prices. It's time we demand a change for the better.

Among the OECD countries, Australian electricity prices are amongst the highest and this is partly attributed to the lack of competition in the sector (according to a report by ABC News, 2019). We believe opening up the market to all retailers could spur innovative energy solutions and drive down prices, ultimately leading to significant savings for all consumers.

This is not an issue that affects just us, but millions of Queensland residents who are seeking a fair, competitive, and inclusive electricity market. Therefore, we call upon the Queensland Government and the Australian Energy Regulator to take steps to reform the current system. By doing so, they can ensure that the electricity market structure benefits all, not just the monopolistic entities.
