Open PG County Animal Shelter on Sundays and Mondays

Open PG County Animal Shelter on Sundays and Mondays
The Issue
Each week, as an animal advocate in Prince George's County, MD, it's truly heartbreaking to see the list of dogs deemed urgent at our local animal shelter. These animals, filled with potential for love and companionship, face a grave deadline each Tuesday by 7 PM. Unfortunately, the shelter remains closed on Sundays and Mondays, diminishing their chances of finding a forever home or a temporary haven with loving foster families. For those of us who work during typical weekday hours, the available time to visit and interact with these dogs is severely limited.
Imagine the difference if the shelter opened its doors on Sunday and Monday. With additional visiting days, more residents could step into the shelter, meet these lovable but desperate animals, and potentially change their futures. Each weekend closure represents numerous missed opportunities for these dogs to find families ready to embrace them, even if on a temporary basis.
There is a profound need for structural change to better accommodate working families and individuals who wish to help but are constrained by time. Adjusting the shelter hours to include Sundays and Mondays would extend the narrow window critical for saving these dogs' lives. Nearly 7 million companion animals enter animal shelters every year in the U.S., according to the ASPCA, with adoptable dogs often at risk of euthanasia due to overcrowding.
By adjusting the operational days, PG County can better meet the needs of its community and foster a thriving connection between potential adopters and these urgent animals. In providing more accessibly timed opportunities, the shelter stands to see an increase in adoption rates and a decrease in the urgency list.
Our request is clear: allow Prince George's County Animal Shelter to open on Sundays and Mondays to provide these animals with the extended chances they need. Adding these crucial days can save lives — giving every dog on the urgent list a fighting chance. Please sign this petition to call for an essential change that reflects our community's commitment to compassion and responsible pet guardianship.
