Open a Whole Foods Store in Charleston, West Virginia

The Issue

From everyday sustenance to weekend celebrations, food is heavily involved in every facet of our lives, and the saying, "you are what you eat" is proven true time and time again. The food we consume impacts our physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing, and access to nourishing, ethically sourced produce is the first step to a stronger, healthier community. The state of West Virginia consistently leads the nation in obesity, with an alarming adult obesity rate of 40.6% in 2022, according to a report from the CDC and Trust for America's Health website. Not only this, but according to the American Diabetes Association, 16.2%, or 232,336 of West Virginians were given a diabetes diagnosis in 2021. With an impressive 1 in every 10 adults and 1 out of every 13 children in the nation battling various, potentially life-threatening food allergies (not including the thousands of increasingly prevalent food intolerances and sensitivities), the privilege of having more nutritional, highly selective food choices would increase the overall quality of life for an astounding number of people (Food Allergy and Research Association, 2023). I personally know of many people in my area who struggle to locate gluten free, organic, and dairy free food options. I, myself, am trying to go completely gluten free after nearly a decade of chronic acid reflux, severe anxiety and depression, and autoimmunity that I believe to be directly attributed to my daily eating habits. What many don't realize about our rural state is that there is a severe lack of healthy food options statewide (i.e., food deserts) directly contributing to this ongoing crisis of health. How are we supposed to make healthy choices when the necessary resources are not available to us? How can we change if we are not given the proper tools to bring about said change? With the addition of a Whole Foods Market in the Capital City, a densely-populated area that is just an hour's drive from the newest national park, the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, and soon to be home to the state's largest, multimillion-dollar sports complex, citizens from all around the Mountain State can feel empowered to take their health into their own hands and lead happier, healthier, more productive lives.
