The Issue

Every month, families across New York rely on the consistent delivery and pricing of utilities like electricity to plan their budgets. Yet, when New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) suddenly implements rate hikes that can double or even triple the amount owed, it leaves homes and budgets in disarray. This unpredictability throws a wrench into financial planning and leaves many residents unable to cover these skyrocketing expenses.

The impact of these unexpected bills is devastating. With no warning and limited capacity to adjust household finances, countless families are struggling to keep the lights on. For some, these hikes mean choosing between essential needs such as food and medication and paying their energy bills. It’s not just an inconvenience, but a direct hit to the well-being and stability of New York residents.

The New York Public Service Commission (PSC) has a duty to protect consumers from such erratic changes. As the regulatory body overseeing NYSEG, the PSC has the authority to investigate the legitimacy and fairness of these sudden rate hikes. By launching a formal investigation, the PSC can uncover the rationale behind these increases and determine if they are justified. If found unwarranted, the PSC has the power to demand refunds for consumers, enforce rate caps, and ensure that energy bills remain affordable in the future.

In one example, a household used 44.74% less energy than the same billing cycle as the previous year and yet the bill was the same as the previous year. For someone on a fixed income or tight budget, that's a significant and unsustainable increase. Without any tangible solutions or accountability, this dilemma will only persist.

We need transparency and fair treatment from our utility providers. By supporting this petition, you are demanding accountability and action from the PSC. Let's stand together to ensure that no New Yorker has to live in fear of their next energy bill.

Please sign this petition to urge the New York Public Service Commission to open a formal investigation into NYSEG's rate hikes and protect consumers from unfair and impractical rate increases. Together, we can work towards a fair and just solution.

Thanks for contacting the New York State Department of Public Service. The petitioners may leave public comments about NYSEG’s ratemaking process on the Department of Public Service’s Document and Matter Management system. There are separate dockets for electric rates (25-E-0375 ) and gas rates (25-G-0378), which contain all of the documents considered before NYSEG set its rates. Thanks. • Link to 25-E-0375: https://documents.dps.ny.gov/public/MatterManagement/CaseMaster.aspx?MatterCaseNo=25-e-0375 • Link to 25-G-0378: https://documents.dps.ny.gov/public/MatterManagement/CaseMaster.aspx?MatterSeq=86582&MNO=25-G-0378
