Graham Pegg started this petition to Ontario Tech University (Faculty of Health Sciences)

Nursing is a profession that requires thorough theoretical instruction and practical training. With appropriate instruction, aspiring nurses are trained to work successfully within the health care sector. Without proper training, instruction, and guidance it is hard to imagine how these students will succeed in this important, and much-needed field of work. Though Ontario Tech University is accredited by the CASN (Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing) they are failing to properly prepare their nursing students for their futures in healthcare and to set these students up for success.

Though the students are receiving satisfactory instruction in terms of theoretical material taught either synchronously, or asynchronously in lectures, the nursing students at Ontario Tech University have no access to the simulation labs. Simulation labs are very important for nursing students to understand core practical concepts within the scope of nursing. Specifically, first-year nursing students learn very foundational practical skills that help them to assimilate seamlessly into the practical setting that is taken in their second semester.

Due to unfortunate circumstances regarding the Covid-19 pandemic, these first-year students are unable to enter into the hospital setting this semester. This is understandable, however, why rob them of the opportunity to learn these foundational skills in the simulation lab? Ontario Tech University shares a campus with Durham College, yet the college nursing students and paramedic students are allowed to practice their skills in their labs on campus. Furthermore, other reputable universities (University of Toronto, Western University, Queens University, etc.) have their labs open to nursing students, so why doesn't Ontario Tech University?

With the expensive cost of schooling that students are expected to pay, you would think that there would be a way to work around these issues. To practice, these students were given instructions on how to roll towels to simulate arms for blood pressure. These students were also told that they would need a body to practice on for another course. They instructed the students to go online to buy a paper cut out of a body under the “Anatomy for Kids” section on a website titled “Adventure in a Box” ( https://www.adventure-in-a-box.com/product/life-size-human-anatomy-printable-models-for-children/ ). Alternatively, they had suggested taping together 6-8 pieces of poster board and tracing a person's body onto it. You would think that the university would be able to supply these paper bodies to the students themselves, or to come up with a better alternative. Being in the simulation lab would solve this problem and many others that might arise later on in these nursing students’ educations due to lack of proper training.

I believe this pandemic is a testimony to how important nurses are to hospitals, long-term care homes, and other clinical settings. These nursing students deserve to be in the lab, learning skills that they will need to demonstrate at the hospital in their next year of practicum. Without this experience, nursing students risk being unprepared and incapable of performing necessary tasks that are expected of them. This is not only stressful for the nursing students, but for the nurses giving instruction. This is unfair, unreasonable, and unacceptable. Ontario Tech University NEEDS to open its labs to the students!
