Jayden Smith started this petition to Ontario Ministry of Health

We are privileged to live in a society where access to health care is considered a fundamental human right. But our current health care system often comes at the cost of equitable health care, specifically for the transgender community in Ontario. This petition advocates for structural and policy change within the Ontario health care system to address the multiple barriers that the transgender community face regarding having guaranteed access to safe and competent medical services.

Stemming from a growing mistrust towards health care providers, services and institutions amongst the transgender community, there lies an increasing health disparity between transgender communities and the general population (Rapid Response Service, 2017). This mistrust is emphasized through a lack of trans-competent care, stigma and transphobia from health practitioners, and the lack of a safe environment where members of the transgender community can freely and comfortably receive the medical services they are entitled to (Rapid Response Service, 2017). This concern is heightened when you consider that the transgender community also experiences other socio-economic factors, which further result in poorer health outcomes. In a survey conducted by Trans Pulse Canada in March of 2019, where 2873 transgender identifying individuals were surveyed, 34% of respondents were living in poverty, and 19% of respondents had said to have experienced homelessness at some point in their lives (Trans PULSE Canada, 2020). The transgender community also experience long-wait times for essential gender-affirming medical procedures, wait times that have been increased with the presence of COVID-19. These long wait times, especially concerning necessary hormone treatments, can prove very dangerous for the transgender community.

This petition works to identify and reform the structural issues within the current Ontario health care system. We aim to create an atmosphere where medical practitioners are informed about the specific health care needs of transgender individuals, stigma and transphobia are repressed specifically within these environments, and an increasingly holistic approach to practice is prioritized. This structural change can take the form of policy changes, additional education for health care providers, the involvement of the transgender community in program development and the guarantee of best practices (Rapid Response Service, 2017).
