Stop Bill 175 in Ontario! Home care must be a public, not-for-profit service

0 have signed. Let’s get to 5,000!

The Progressive Conservative government’s new home care legislation, Bill 175, Connecting People to Home and Community Care Act 2020, is not aligned to the interests of staff and over 700,000 clients.

The legislation will enable further privatization of a home care system already undermined by for-profit delivery.

The legislation is advancing with only three days of public consultation (June 15-17) in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic and partial lockdown. If passed, the legislation will remove what’s left of public control and accountability by handing over home care coordination and oversight to the contracted-out companies themselves.

Ontarians deserve more democratic community control, transparency and accountability in home care - not less. Home care services should be based on human needs, not considerations like market share, profits and dividends.

We demand that the Ford government immediately:

  • Scrap Bill 175, Connecting People to Home and Community Care Act 2020
  • Begin meaningful consultation with Ontarians, who have long suffered due to years of underfunding and privatization
  • Based on consultation, develop a system premised on public, non-profit delivery of care and needs-based funding.
