One Permit for Nebraska Food Trucks

The Issue

Background
Food trucks are a growing part of Nebraska’s economy, providing diverse, affordable dining options and supporting small business entrepreneurs. However, the current permitting system is burdensome and inefficient. Food truck owners must obtain separate permits for each city and county, leading to excessive fees, redundant paperwork, and inconsistent regulations that hinder growth and limit business expansion.

Other states have successfully implemented a single, statewide food truck permit, creating a more business-friendly environment while maintaining high health and safety standards. Nebraska should follow suit to encourage entrepreneurship, streamline regulations, and support small business owners.

Our Request
We, the undersigned, urge the Nebraska State Legislature to pass legislation establishing a single statewide food truck permit that allows mobile food vendors to operate legally in any city or county within Nebraska without needing additional local permits.

This permit should:
✅ Standardize health and safety regulations across all jurisdictions.
✅ Reduce financial and administrative burdens on food truck operators.
✅ Encourage economic growth and job creation by making it easier to operate statewide.
✅ Maintain food safety and public health through a unified state inspection process.
✅ Allow municipalities to regulate location-specific issues (e.g., zoning and hours of operation) without requiring separate permits.

Why This Matters
✔ Boosts Small Businesses: Streamlining regulations will allow more food trucks to thrive, creating jobs and supporting Nebraska’s economy.
✔ Increases Consumer Access: A statewide permit will enable food trucks to serve more communities, including rural areas currently underserved.
✔ Reduces Government Red Tape: A single permit system simplifies enforcement and reduces unnecessary duplication of regulations.
✔ Promotes Fairness: Large restaurant chains operate across multiple cities without redundant permits—food trucks should have the same opportunity.
