Today, Judge K. Michael Moore ruled in your favor on the Miami redistricting case--ongoing since late 2022. See decision here.
In a decisive move, he sided with you, marking a pivotal moment in our city's electoral landscape. The judge described "a wave of public opposition at multiple Commission meetings where individual citizens presented race-neutral reasons not to split Coconut Grove..." Hurray for you and standing loudly together for your opinion!
Here's a detailed update on what the ruling means for our community:
- All five commission districts were found to be unconstitutionally racially gerrymandered in violation of the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.
- The City of Miami permanently cannot have any elections under the unconstitutional districts.
- The Court will adjudicate what happens next. The Court (not the City) will set a new district map and may required special elections. How and when is not yet decided.
Looking ahead, new maps must be drawn and the Grove will be reunited. Miami's other neighborhoods should be reunited too and we will stand with them as they have stood with us. Making commissioners accountable to the voters can be achieved with more, smaller districts--nine or more. Miami's citizens--not commissioners--should lead these deliberations and shape the future of our community. Judge Moore's ruling underscores how the commissioners since 1997 have failed to deliver the basics of representative democracy to Miami's citizens.
We can win as One Grove and One Miami.
