Last year we mobilized to unanimously oppose the City Commission's division of Coconut Grove among three districts. Commissioners Carollo, De la Portilla, King and Reyes did it anyway. Mayor Suarez hid. Later other Miami neighborhoods joined Grovites to oppose the redistricting's effects on their neighborhoods. Four legal counterattacks were launched and one hit pay dirt. Big time.
Plaintiffs represented by the ACLU won in federal court and forced out the City's maps. During a June commission meeting, the same four commissioners pushed through an ever-so-slightly changed map and declared that all was well. It isn't. Again the Mayor hid.
That June map removed an even greater number of Grovites from the second district...all of Bay Heights in addition to Natoma Manors and Carollo's street.
Last Friday, the ACLU filed a meticulous and comprehensive rebuttal to the City's June map. Joining that filing was a detailed explication of the City's multiple violations of Florida's "Sunshine laws". That filing was signed by former city manager Joe Arriola.
All this good stuff is happening because of your involvement. Thank you. It's taking a long time for this to work its way through the courts, but it is working. As the situation continues, we'll keep you informed.
(Don't send money, please. Let's wait and see what happens before next steps.)
Thanks.
