The Issue

In 2025, the Seattle Public Schools board created a policy to have two 30-minute lunches for all high school students. This has significantly impacted students' communities, health, and well-being. By creating two lunches, SPS has separated school clubs and friendships, taking away a space for students to connect with all of their peers. Not only does this impact student relationships, but by only having 30 minutes of lunch students do not nearly have enough time to unwind from the day as well. Lunch is the only break that students get from the day, and by having only 30 minutes, most of the time is used by students to get lunch, find somewhere to sit, and clean up from lunch. This leaves students with very little time to unwind, eat their lunch, and connect with peers. By creating one 45-minute lunch, students can have an acceptable amount of time to have a break from their school day and allow student relationships and clubs to stay intact.
